Pound Ridge, you are looking good!

On June 23 and 24, 2022,  two advisors from America in Bloom’s National Awards Program will visit residential, municipal, and commercial areas of town. Following the visit, the team will submit written recommendations to the community and may nominate the community for national recognition. Growing Pound Ridge, a committee of the Pound Ridge Partnership, elected to participate in the America in Bloom program for the potential quality of life and economic benefits derived from an outsider’s perspective.

Let’s show off to the America in Bloom team of advisors:

  • Does anything need to be cleaned, repaired, or removed?
  • Are window boxes and pots in good shape? Coordinated?
  • Is there a place to add a basket of flowers?
  • Can outdoor tables & chairs be re-arranged to add charm?
  • Is a spring, summer, and fall weeding needed?

Here are a few simple ideas:

In the spring, plant annuals in an old basket, a nod to our history as ‘Basket Town’.

This year’s hanging basket color scheme will be bright and colorful.

In the fall, plant daffodil bulbs for sunny cheerful flowers next spring and years to come.

Buy from the Pound Ridge Garden Club’s annual daffodil fundraiser.

Plant native perennials to connect to the natural beauty of Pound Ridge and support pollinators. Avoid planting invasive species such as barberry or winged euonymus.

It’s Easy to Plant an Old Basket

  1. Find an old basket, maybe at the town-wide tag sale.

  1. Add a Liner: Reuse a plastic bag or piece of plastic sheeting (make a few holes for  drainage). Other liners are coco-liner or sphagnum moss.
  2. For drainage, add a handful of shipping peanuts,  gravel or small rocks.
  3. Add potting soil and plants (annuals, succulents, herbs).
  4. Care for your basket. Water every day when it is hot; every other day when it is cool (spring and fall). Take the day off when it rains. Add a touch of fertilizer.
